Tophane-i Amire binası, 15. yüzyılda Bizans döneminde Ste. Claire ve Aya Photini kiliselerinin yer aldığı Metopon adlı bölgede kurulmuştur. Sultan II. Mehmet tarafından fetihten sonra kurulan top döküm merkezi, Osmanlı ordu ve donanmasının kullandığı askeri topların üretildiği yerdir. Bina, 1850’lerden sonra Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda silah sanayisinin ve silah ticaretinin merkezi olmuş, 1900’lü yıllarda bir süre eğitim merkezi olarak kullanılmış, 1958 yılında Askeri Müze olarak kullanılması gündeme gelmiştir. 1992 yılına kadar çeşitli düzenlemeler geçiren Tophane-i Amire binası, bu tarihte Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi’ne devredilmiştir. Günümüzde Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi Tophane-i Amire Kültür ve Sanat Merkezi olarak hizmete açılan bu tarihi askeri binada Tophane-i Amire Beş Kubbe, Tophane-i Amire Tek Kubbe ve Tophane-i Amire Sarnıçlar olmak üzere üç ayrı sergi holü bulunmakta ve bu mekanlarda yurtiçi ve yurtdışı sergiler düzenlenmektedir.
